As part of the agency’s new registration system, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is implementing an identity verification process to curb fraud in the trucking industry.

The FMCSA recently announced that all new applicants registering for a USDOT Number
in the current Unified Registration System (URS) will be required to pass identity proofing and verification in an effort to reduce fraud.

Through a partnership with biometrics and security company IDEMIA, FMCSA will require any user seeking a new registration to scan a QR code with a smartphone or tablet to begin the identity verification session, and then to take photos of both sides of a government-issued identification document, and finally to submit a facial scan or “selfie.”

FMCSA says that these identity verification steps will

  • Verify legitimacy of an applicant’s identity
  • Reduce fraudulent activity
  • Enhance security of FMCSA systems
  • Protect sensitive data

The FMCSA-produced video below provides a walkthrough of the identity verification process.
