A newly signed law in Maryland will crack down on drunk driving offenses committed by commercial vehicle drivers.

On April 8, 2025, Maryland Governor Wes Moore signed into law SB 187.

The new law will require Maryland’s Motor Vehicle Administration to disqualify an individual from operating a commercial vehicle for one year if that person “drives or attempts to drive any motor vehicle while the alcohol concentration of the person’s blood or breath is 0.08 or greater.”

The law affects both commercial driver’s license (CDL) holders and commercial learner’s permit (CLP) holders.

Under federal law, the blood alcohol content (BAC) limit for commercial vehicle drivers is 0.04, lower than the standard limit for non-commercial drivers of 0.08.

SB0187 goes into effect on October 1, 2025.
