A truck driver was found to be texting and driving in the moments before a fatal accident with a car in south Texas on Saturday.
The accident happened on Saturday, April 19th in San Benito, Texas at about noon.
According to KRGV, 39-year-old Fernando Gonzales Altimirano was driving a Kenworth semi truck south on FM 1421 behind a Chevrolet Aveo driven by 70-year-old Lorenzo Guajardo. Guajardo soon slowed down to make a left turn onto Road 233, and that’s when Altamirano slammed into the car. The force of the collision left Guajardo’s vehicle upside down.
Guajardo was transported to a nearby hospital, but later died of his injuries.
An investigation into the incident revealed “the driver of the Kentworth was texting and driving at the time of the crash,” DPS stated in the news release.
Altamirano was arrested and is currently being held on $500,000 bond for criminally negligent homicide charges. He is a resident of Mexico.
