Kentucky State Police (KSP) troopers are investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred near an Amazon facility on Tuesday.

The shooting occurred around 7 a.m. on April 29 on Industrial Road in Florence, Kentucky.

The incident began when the Boone County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) and the Florence Police Department (FPD) responded to a report about a stolen semi truck.

Police performed a traffic stop on the semi truck.

The occupant of the semi truck, Ohio resident Michael Simpson, 35, exited the vehicle but did not comply with police commands, “which resulted in a physical altercation,” according to KSP.

Troopers say Simpson brandished a firearm and pointed it towards his own head, and then began walking towards an industrial park where an Amazon facility is located.

KSP says that “at one point during the incident, two BCSO deputies fired their agency-issued weapons.”

Simpson was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

One of the FPD officers sustained minor injuries during the initial physical altercation.

The incident is under investigation by KSP.
