Canadian police arrested a man in Alberta over the weekend for a bizarre rampage at a police station using a stolen trackhoe.
Shortly before 7 p.m. on May 3, a man in a trackhoe entered the lot at the Bonnyville RCMP detachment after stealing the heavy equipment from a local business “moments prior,” police said during a Monday press conference.
According to Bonnyville RCMP, the trackhoe crashed though a fence, and then the operator picked up several boulders and brought them to the RCMP detachment, leaving the rocks in front of the prisoner bay door “in an apparent attempt to hinder our officer’s ability to respond to calls.”
The man then used the trackhoe to damage five unoccupied RCMP vehicles parked at the facility, rendering them inoperable.
After this, the suspect fled on foot.
Assisted by police canine units, police located the suspect in a nearby tree line.
Police say that the suspect resisted arrest and was bitten by the police dog.
The suspect was taken to a hospital for treatment and later released.
No police officers were hurt.
The suspect, a 62 year old Bonnyville resident, faces 13 charges, including reckless driving, mischief over $5000, breaking and entering, theft over $5000, possession of stolen property over $5000, obstructing and resisting arrest, and uttering threats.
Drugs and alcohol are not thought to have been a factor.
Police say that there was no threat to the public as RCMP was the target of the attack.
