The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has deployed new patrol vehicles that are “specifically designed to blend into traffic” in order to nab dangerous drivers.
As part of CHP’s Specially Marked Patrol Vehicle (SMPV) Program, the agency has deployed a fleet of 2024 Dodge Durango vehicles that still have the manufacturer’s paint job rather than the distinct black and white color scheme of a typical CHP cruiser.
CHP says that the SMPV’s “discreet design” helps them blend into traffic to allow troopers to better identify and stop dangerous drivers on California roadways.
“We’re deploying 100 of these vehicles statewide to confront a growing threat — aggressive drivers who speed excessively, tailgate, and endanger lives. When they spot our marked units, they often change their behavior briefly. These new patrol vehicles will help us hold them accountable,” said CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee.
Other features of the new SMPVs include V8 Hemi engines, concealed 360 degree emergency lighting, and a version of the CHP badge on the door.
Troopers inside the SMPVs will be in full CHP uniform, and the vehicles will primarily be deployed on multi-lane highways.
