A trucker and his dog are recovering together after a wreck with an alleged drunk driver in California earlier this month.

The accident happened on Interstate 5 in Redding, California on May 6th, when 68-year-old Sheila Acker failed to navigate a curve and crashed through a guardrail, down an embankment, and into the side of truck driver Miles Heagy’s semi truck. Heagy’s semi truck overturned as a result of the accident.

According to ABC 7, Heagy sustained moderate injuries that have not been specified, but his recovery is expected to take about a month. Meanwhile, Heagy’s dog Rowdy was with him on the truck at the time of the crash, and has suffered his own share of injuries.

Heagy, his fiancee Debra, and Rowdy were all reunited after the crash and made their way home to Tri-Cities, Washington. Once home, the couple discovered that Rowdy had sustained two broken ribs in the crash, including one that was displaced. Rowdy was also found to have head trauma, and developed kennel cough.

Vets say Rowdy should recover in a few weeks, but until then, Heagy and Rowdy are resting at home recovering together, thankful that things didn’t go worse than they did.

“I’m lucky that she hit me instead of, like we were saying earlier, the car that has a family in it,” Heagy explained. “I mean she could of killed somebody. I mean, I’m painful but grateful she hit me and not something else.”

Acker has been arraigned on three charges of driving under the influence causing bodily injury, with prior convictions. Her next court appearance is scheduled for May 21st. She is currently being held on $75,000 bond in Shasta County Jail.
