A murder suspect was shot in the leg by a semi truck passenger as he tried to steal the rig from the truck driver.

The incident happened over the weekend on Sunday, May 18th in Baldwin County, Alabama. The suspect, 28-year-old Mike Thomas, was wanted in connection to a murder in Georgia.

According to Center Daily Times, Thomas first ran from police in connection to a murder in East Point, Georgia, where he shot at officers as he fled. Thomas fled police in his car, and was eventually stopped by spike strips. He then fled on foot before eventually running up on a truck driver in his semi truck. The murder suspect then reportedly struck the truck driver in the head multiple times with a pistol before being shot in the leg by a passenger in the semi truck.

The Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office assisted in a vehicle pursuit that began in Conecuh County, Alabama, with a wanted murder suspect out of Georgia who had already fired shots at pursuing officers,” the sheriff’s office said. “Deputies were able to spike the vehicle’s tires, bringing the chase to an end. The suspect then ran from the vehicle and attempted to car-jack an 18 wheeler, striking the driver multiple times in the head and face with a pistol. A passenger in the 18 wheeler fired several shots at the suspect, who then jumped off the truck and ran into the woods,” the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office wrote in a Facebook post

A SWAT team then used dogs to track down the murder suspect with the help of an air unit. Thomas was captured about six hours later at 5:45 a.m. on Monday, May 19th. He was found with  “a gunshot wound to his leg, presumed to have occurred during the attempted car-jacking.”

Thomas has been taken into custody, where he is currently facing two counts of robbery, and one count of aggravated assault, reported WKRG 5.

“This is a shining example of how agency cooperation and teamwork leads to a successful outcome. We thank all the agencies and the patience of the public during this prolonged event,” the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office wrote.
