Michigan lawmakers are considering a bill that would restrict truck traffic from using the far left lane of the roadway.
On May 22, 2025, House Bill 4522 was introduced by State Rep. William Bruck.
The bill seeks to prohibit trucks from using the left lane on any roadway with three or more lanes.
If construction closes one or more lanes of the three roadway, resulting in only two usable lanes, the bill would require that trucks remain in the right lane.
Exceptions would be granted for trucks making a left-hand turn, for safety hazards in the roadway, or if otherwise posted because of a closure due to construction or repair.
The left lane restriction would apply to drivers of a “truck with a gross weight of more than 10,000 pounds, a truck tractor, or a combination of a vehicle and trailer or semitrailer.”
The bill has been referred to the Michigan Legislature’s Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure.
