The Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) Highway Patrol recently conducted a traffic enforcement effort aimed at preventing commercial vehicle fires on SR-87.
Arizona troopers conducted the “enforcement and education detail” along southbound SR-87 between Payson and Fountain Hills, which they say is “notorious for commercial vehicle fires.”

During the detail, “multiple” trucks were taken out-of-service for equipment violations, including faulty tires and brakes.

“A common theme is new CDL drivers driving automatic semis, using their brakes too much, and not using lower gears. This can cause brakes to overheat and catch fire, resulting in 100’s of thousands of dollars in damaged property, wildland fires, and major traffic delays,” AZDPS Highway Patrol said.
