A man was arrested in North Carolina on Monday after holding a truck driver at gun point and trying to cause an explosion.

The incident began at around 9 a.m. in the parking area beside the Country Market Convenience Store on Startown Road in Maiden, North Carolina.

According to WCNC, 54-year-old James Matthew Roland first approached a parked tractor trailer at the convenience store, pointed a gun at the driver, and demanded he exit the cab. The truck driver complied and walked away from the truck, leaving Roland to fire multiple shots into the fuel tanks, apparently in an attempt to cause an explosion.

The shots did not cause an explosion, and Roland soon fled in his own pickup truck. As police interviewed the truck driver, Roland inexplicably returned to the scene of the crime, and soon led police on a four mile chase that lasted until the pickup truck ran out of fuel.

Roland physically resisted arrest, but was eventually detained. Police discovered a loaded pistol in his pocket and methamphetamine in his pickup. During interviews with police, Roland admitted that he was “attempting to cause a fuel explosion” when he fired the shots.

No injuries were reported. No other information has been released.
