A bill aimed at “curbing nuclear verdicts” in trucking accident lawsuits has died in the Senate.
Senate Bill 30 died during the Texas legislative session, despite being named a priority bill for this session.
Supporters of the bill, such as Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, say that the goal of the bill was “curbing nuclear verdicts” and “protecting Texas trucking” by taking an “essential step forward curbing the meritless lawsuits plaguing Texas businesses of all sizes, across all sectors, by preventing unjustified damage awards, and restoring fairness and transparency to the courtroom,” the Texas Trucking Association and Lone Star Economic alliance wrote in a joint statement about the verdict.
Supporters of the bill believed that the passing of the bill would have helped to bring down insurance rates in the trucking industry, reported KXAN. The TTA and LSEA have called for the legislature to once again “prioritize” the bill next session.
