The family of a truck driver forced to leap from his semi truck as it dangled off of Interstate 65 is asking for help with expenses during his “long and difficult recovery.”

The accident happened on June 13th on Interstate 65 at Spaghetti Junction in Louisville, Kentucky.

According to WAVE 3, the semi truck was on I-65 when it crashed and fell from the roadway and landed partially on the ramps for I-64 East and I-71 North. The truck driver was forced to leap from the dangling truck cab through the passenger door before the truck burst into flames. The man survived the incident, but was left with serious injuries that will have him out of work for an extended period of time.

The truck driver, Jeffery Walker, is from Arkansas and is currently suffering from a broken leg, ankle, and foot from the jump. He also injured his hip, back, and elbow. Because he is the sole provider for his family, his wife has set up a GoFundMe to help with the medical and general expenses.

“His recovery will be long and difficult. As the sole provider for our household, he is now unable to work, and we are facing an uncertain future. We’re asking for any help—prayers, shares, or donations—to get through this incredibly tough time. Your support will go toward medical expenses, living costs, and anything else needed to help him heal and recover,” the GoFundMe page reads.

“I consider myself a safe driver,” Walker said to WDRB. “I don’t speed. I really don’t know how it happened. It was wet out.”

“I couldn’t open the doors,” he continued. “I couldn’t open the windows. None of it would work. I was looking for something to break the window, couldn’t find anything, and then it flamed up a little higher under the hood.”

Walker says that he is scheduled for surgery in three weeks, but “seeing my family again means the most,” Walker said. “It just feels good to be alive and going home to my grandkids.”

As for truck driving, Walker says that the crash has caused him some doubts about ever getting back on the road.

I’ve definitely been thinking twice about it,” he says.
