Hundreds of workers are facing layoffs starting in August when food distributor United Natural Foods, Inc. (UNFI) closes a Pennsylvania facility.
According to a WARN document filed with Pennsylvania labor authorities in June 2025, Rhode Island-headquartered UNFI plans to shutter a distribution center located at 4255 East Independence Drive in Schnecksville, Pennsylvania.
The facility closure will result in layoffs for 716 workers, including 172 truck drivers, according to PennLive.
The layoffs are scheduled to begin on August 12, 2025, and to be complete by October 18, 2025.
The decision to shutter the distribution center comes after UNFI and Key Food Stores Co-Operative, Inc. “mutually agreed” last month to sever a contract that made UNFI the primary grocery wholesaler to Key Food locations in the Northeast. The contract is expected to terminate around September 20, 2025, according to a Form 8-K filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
In the filing, UNFI called the termination of the contract a “positive outcome for both parties” and said that this was an opportunity to “exit an unprofitable relationship” with Key Food.
UNFI stated that other customers will continue to be served from other nearby facilities.
Earlier this month, UNFI announced that some of the company’s systems had been proactively taken off line following a suspected cyberattack.
