A new Florida law going into effect next week cracks down on excessive speeding with stricter punishments.
On July 1, 2025, former House Bill 351, sponsored by State Reps. Representatives Danny Alvarez and Susan Plasencia, will go into effect.
The law targets “excessive speeders,” defined as a driver who either exceeds the speed limit by 50 m.p.h. or more or who drives at 100 m.p.h. or more in a manner that threatens the safety of other persons or property or interferes with the operation of any vehicle.
A person convicted of excessive speeding for the first time under the new law faces up to 30 days in jail and a $500 fine, or both.
A second or subsequent excessive speeding conviction carries a penalty of up to 90 days in jail or a fine of $1,000, or both. A second or subsequent excessive speeding violation within 5 years after the date of a prior conviction for a excessive speeding results in the driver having his or her driving privilege revoked for at least 180 days but no more than 1 year.
The bill was signed into law in May 2025.
