AmeriStarRail has pitched a major coast-to-coast rail project that they say could “usher in a profitable Golden Age of rail travel for passengers and truckers.”

AmeriStarRail, a private sector high-speed rail company, has issued a sweeping proposal to Amtrak, asking to initiate a partnership on a project called the “Transcontinental Chief.”

In a June 30 letter to Amtrak President Roger Harris, AmeriStarRail proposed a joint venture to create a high-speed railroad route between Los Angeles and New York to be used by passengers as well as commercial freight trucks. The entire journey could be completed in less than 72 hours, the company said, with stops in Harrisburg, Chicago, and at the Grand Canyon.

AmeriStarRail said that the goal would be to have the service up and running by May 10, 2026, in time to service soccer fans attending the FIFA World Cup, Newsweek reports.

“The Transcontinental Chief will be a great opportunity for Amtrak to team up with the private sector to confront the challenges of its money-losing long-distance trains and create opportunities to usher in a profitable Golden Age of rail travel for passengers and truckers, with the ingenuity of free enterprise, as we celebrate our great nation’s 250th birthday next year,” the letter stated.

Truckers would be able to drive aboard the Transcontinental Chief and make use of dining and sleeper car services as well as other Amtrak amenities while onboard.

The proposed Transcontinental Chief would be completely privately funded, AmeriStarRail said, though the proposal has also been sent to the White House and to Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy.

The plan draws on European models for moving commercial trucks by rail.

Amtrak has not yet responded to the proposal.

A retired railroad engineer made headlines last year with a similar proposal to cut down on semi truck crashes along the I-70 Mountain Corridor in Colorado by loading trucks onto trains to carry them up and over the Rocky Mountains.
