The California Department of Transportation has announced a project aimed at Highway 70 safety improvements in Northern California with a cost of approximately $104.6 million.

The State Highway 70 Safety Improvement Project will include construction on multiple sections of the roadway in Yuba County, California, and construction is expected to begin in the Spring of 2026.

The project will include lowering a road between Laurellen Road and the South Honcut Creek Bridge, which will prevent future semi truck crashes involving low clearance. Caltrans reports that 16 semi truck crashes occurred at the low bridge area over a span of two years.

In addition to the lowering of the road, the project will include the widening of several intersections, added lanes, the installation of rumble strips, relocation of utility poles, and paved shoulders at bus stops.

“The safety on this stretch of highway needs some improvements,” Caltrans spokesperson Megan Reese said to FOX40. “Not only the underpass, but the pedestrian and biking (areas) needed upgrades. With this project, the safety of (students) going to and from school will be improved.”

The $104.6 million for the project comes from both federal and state funding.
