Police do not plan issue citations to a driver who abandoned a vehicle on a Louisiana interstate shoulder over the weekend, leading to a fiery crash that claimed the life of a truck driver.
The crash occurred on May 20 in Lafayette, Louisiana.
Fifty-seven year old Texas-based truck driver Mariano Gonzalez was traveling north on I-49 when he struck an unoccupied vehicle on the shoulder, causing the truck to leave the interstate.
The truck came to a stop on a service road at 3100 NE Evangeline Thruway near East Butcher Switch. A major vehicle fire occurred following the crash.
Gonzalez died in the crash.
While the crash remains under investigation, Lafayette Police told local outlet KLFY that they do not plan to issue any citations to the motorist who abandoned the vehicle along I-49.
“I can tell you this vehicle will not be cited because it was two feet from the fog line which is the adequate amount of feet away from the roadway,” Sgt. Robin Green told the outlet.
