Authorities in Oregon report that a tanker truck driver lost his life on Tuesday after crashing into a tree near Lyons.

The collision occurred shortly after 10:30 a.m. on May 23 at the 4600 block of Lyons Mill City Drive near Lyons, Oregon.

According to the Linn County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO), tanker truck driver Steven Froemke, 63, “was traveling east on Lyons Mill City when he did not negotiate a corner, and drove off the road, causing the 2000 Kenworth Carson Oil tanker truck to crash into a tree, and catch fire.”

LCSO said that explosions were reported as the vehicle burned. The fire spread to nearby trees and an abandoned home.

When police arrived at the scene, they found the tanker truck fully engulfed in flame.

Froemke was found deceased in the vehicle.

Police said that several hundred gallons of fuel spilled as a result of the crash, including regular grade, supreme, and diesel.

“It is unknown at this time what caused Froemke to leave the roadway, but there is no indication of impairment,” LCSO said.
