A woman is dead after a semi truck lost an axle in California on Thursday. 

The incident occurred on July 20th in Merced, California at around 10:30 a.m. on Highway 99 north of Franklin Road. 

According to Your Central Valley News, the big rig was heading north on Highway 99 in a construction zone when an axle came loose and bounced over the highway divider. The axle then crashed into a pickup truck heading south on Highway 99. 

The female motorist was killed in the impact. A 5-year-old child in the backseat was unhurt. The truck driver was not hurt and is cooperating with investigators.
