Transportation officials in New Mexico say that westbound I-10 near Lordsburg is closed until further notice after a truck hauling heavy equipment struck an overpass.

The overpass strike occurred shortly before 9 a.m. on March 7 in the westbound lanes of I-10 at Exit 24.

“CMV oversized load was traveling westbound with an excavator on a flatbed trailer and did not clear the bridge of exit 24,” said Hidalgo County Fire Rescue District 1.

Firefighters reported “no fatalities on scene,” but the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) said that the crash caused “significant damage to the bridge deck and other components.”

NMDOT says that I-10 westbound will remain closed until further notice as engineers work to assess the damage to the bridge structure. Drivers should expect delays as westbound traffic is being rerouted off and back on at the exit ramp.
