Multiple fatalities were reported during a pileup crash in Austin, Texas, late last night.
The crash occurred at 11:23 p.m. on March 13 in the 12900 block of I-35 in north Austin.
Police say that 17 vehicles, including a semi truck, were involved in a crash in the southbound lanes of I-35.
When crews arrived on scene, several people were pinned inside their vehicles.
Five people were pronounced dead at the scene, including three adults, one child, and one infant.
Eleven people were hospitalized with injuries.
Local outlet KXAN reports that police have arrested at least one person in connection with the crash as of Friday morning.
Vehicular homicide detectives, and impaired driving investigation unit, and a commercial vehicle enforcement unit are taking part in the investigation, according to the Austin Police Department.
“This incident was incredibly chaotic, and it was spread out over about a tenth of a mile,” said Krista Stedman with Austin-Travis County EMS.
Southbound I-35 is still closed as of Friday morning as cleanup and investigation continues at the crash site.
