Arizona authorities are investigating a fatal multi-vehicle collision that occurred amid severe winter weather on Thursday.

The crash took place on March 13 on I-40 at mile marker 159 near Williams, Arizona.

According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the crash involved “multiple vehicles, including tractor-trailers.”

Officials have confirmed that three people died in the crash. It isn’t clear how many people were injured.

“Ash Fork Fire assisted Williams Fire Department on a multi-vehicle crash on the 40 freeway yesterday. The 40 freeway between Williams and Ash Fork can be very dangerous during adverse weather conditions. Drive accordingly, or avoid it entirely if possible,” said the Ash Fork Fire Department on Friday morning.

The cause of the crash is under investigation, but it occurred amid a major winter storm in Northern Arizona.

As of Friday morning, the following roadways in Arizona remain closed for crashes and winter weather:

  • Interstate 40 eastbound near Kingman and in Ash Fork (milepost 71 & 146)
  • Interstate 40 westbound in Holbrook (milepost 289)
  • Interstate 17 northbound at State Route 179 (milepost 299)
  • State Route 89A in both directions between Sedona and I-17 (mileposts 375 and 397)
  • State Route 87 southbound just south of Winslow (milepost 338)
  • State Route 260 westbound from the State Route 87 junction to Camp Verde (mileposts 252-228)
