North Charleston Police announced Thursday that a truck driver involved in a hit and run with another trucker last week will not face charges.
The accident happened on March 17th at about 7:45 a.m. on Interstate 526 in North Charleston, South Carolina.
According to Live5News, 56-year-old William Bennett’s tractor trailer became disabled, so he pulled over on the eastbound side of the Don Holt Bridge near the exit for North Rhett Avenue. At some point, Bennett fell or stepped off of the driver’s side door and into the path of an oncoming Freightliner. He was struck by the rear tires of the semi truck, which kept driving. Bennett was pronounced dead at the scene.
After an investigation into the incident, police have determined that the Freightliner did not contribute to the collision, and the driver was unaware he had hit someone.
“After a thorough investigation, our Traffic Unit has determined that no charges will be filed in connection with the March 17 fatal accident on I-526,” police spokesman Harve Jacobs said.
