The Wisconsin Department of Transportation is shifting the location of a current northbound Interstate 41 weigh station in Wrightstown to be part of a new $16 million regional State Patrol headquarters under construction.

The State Patrol regional headquarters and new weigh station combined facility is located between Appleton and De Pere. The project is part of a massive I-41 reconstruction effort in northeast Wisconsin.

In Outagamie and Brown counties, WisDOT is expanding 23 miles of I-41 to six travel lanes. It will also replace 11 local and county road overpasses and underpasses and revamp the Wisconsin Highway 15 interchange as a diverging diamond interchange to more safely handle higher traffic volumes.

The new Wisconsin State Patrol Northeast Region Post and I-41 Safety and Weight Enforcement Facility is near County U (County Line Road) in Wrightstown in Outagamie County. It will boast a 400-foot communications tower and 70-foot auxiliary tower from the modern two-story building.

The project has been divided into two phases. Construction on the first part started in October with an initial contract award. The first segment of the project involves demolishing existing buildings and creating a retention pond. This early phase also calls for building the communication towers and the new dual-purpose regional state police headquarters with the up-to-date safety and weight enforcement facility. The second phase of construction will include building ramp connections to I-41, new loop ramps within the project site, a static scale, weigh-in-motion scaling and a parking lot for commercial vehicles on the facility grounds.

Completion is scheduled for the summer of next year. The current site of the Wrightstown weigh station is closed during construction.

The State Patrol has 12 SWEF weigh stations located throughout Wisconsin. Three SWEF facilities (including the Wrightstown one) are in the Northeast region. The others are the Newton facility (on I-43 near the town of Centerville in Manitowoc County) and the I-41 Abrams station (at Little Suamico in Oconto County).

The new State Patrol Northeast region headquarters covers Brown, Calumet, Door, Fond du Lac, Kewaunee, Manitowoc, Marinette, Oconto, Outagamie, Sheboygan and Winnebago counties.
