Traffic is at a crawl on Interstate 35 outside of Austin this morning as official work to clear a pile up crash involving seven vehicles.

The accident happened just before 6:15 a.m. on I-35 south between SE Inner Loop and I-35-BL/Exit 259 near Georgetown, Texas north of Austin.

At 6:20 a.m. the Texas Department of Transportation and Georgetown Police Department reported a complete closure of the interstate due to “a crash involving an 18 wheeler and 6 vehicles.” As of 10:24 a.m. Georgetown PD estimated that the interstate would remain completely closed for at least two more hours. By 1:55 p.m. I-35 south was reopened to traffic, but the West Frontage Road remained closed.

“Traffic will still be heavy as it clears,” Georgetown PD wrote.

Motorists stuck in the resulting traffic report that traffic is still at a crawl, stating they have moved approximately one mile every hour since the roadway was closed around 6:15 a.m. As of 10 a.m., drivers were still reporting a total closure with very little traffic flow.

“My husband is stuck in it. He saw a guy walk to HEB get whatever then back to his car and no one moved. They can’t get off the freeway and it poured last night so the grassy area is soaked,” one woman commented on the Georgetown Police Department Facebook post.

“I just came through there and it was still blocked off. It’s pretty spread across the highway. I would anticipate it being closed for a while, especially if there were fatalities or serious injuries. Not sure if there was but there were still wrecked vehicles everywhere,” wrote another motorist.

“I move about a mile every 40min-1hr,” commented a third.

No further information about the accident or road closures has been released.
