Four linemen are dead and two more are injured after a city dump truck drove through the work crew and a bucket truck on Thursday afternoon.
The accident happened just before 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 24th at the intersection of Carroll Street and Church Street in Eden, North Carolina.
According to WTVM 9, 66-year-old Michael Ray Vernon was heading north on Carroll Street in a City of Eden dump truck when he drove through a stop sign intersection at Church Street and hit six people working on power lines. Vernon then crashed into an occupied bucket truck, veered off the road, and came to a stop in the ditch.
Four of the six linemen struck by the dump truck died at the scene. Two other linemen sustained life-threatening injuries and were flown to a hospital. One person in the bucket truck was taken to a hospital with non life threatening injuries. Vernon sustained minor injuries in the accident.
“We are saddened about the tragic event that happened today, and our hearts go out to the families and teammates of those involved. The safety of our employees, contractors and customers is the highest priority at Duke Energy. We are working closely with law enforcement officials,” the utility company said.
Vernon has been charged with a stop sign violation and misdemeanor death by motor vehicle. The accident is still under investigation.
