The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is conducting a $1 million speed reduction pilot program on two major interstates.
As of April 10, 2025, WSDOT cameras are live in the following locations:
- Southbound I-5 between Cook and Bow Hill roads in Skagit County
- Eastbound I-90 near Liberty Lake between the Liberty Lake and State Line Interchanges in Spokane County

The cameras track speed and license plates of speeding vehicles, and the registered owners of speeding vehicles are being mailed notices informing them of the speed at which their vehicle was traveling and the potential cost of a ticket for that speed, but no fines will be issued at this time. Additionally, WSDOT says that the pilot program will not impact driving records and violations will not be reported to insurance.
WSDOT officials say that the purpose of the pilot program is to “change driver behavior, prevent collisions and injuries and save lives.”
The pilot is funded by $1 million from the state Legislature.
After the pilot program concludes in June 2025, WSDOT will analyze the collected data and report to the state Legislature.
The pilot program is taking place as a partnership between WSDOT, the Washington State Patrol, and the Washington Traffic Safety Commission.
