The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) announced a meeting to determine the cause of a multiple fatality crash involving parked commercial vehicles that occurred in Illinois in 2023.

On April 30, 2025, the NTSB announced that a public board meeting is scheduled for May 20 to determine the probable cause of a crash that occurred at a rest area in Highland, Illinois, nearly two years ago.

The crash happened on July 12, 2023, as a motorcoach operated by Greyhound Lines traveling from Indianapolis, Indiana, to St. Louis, Missouri, was westbound on I-70.

“As the motorcoach approached the westbound Silver Lake rest area near mile marker 27.4, the motorcoach departed I-70 onto the rest area exit ramp, where it collided with three truck-tractor semi-trailer combination units that were parked on the ramp’s right shoulder. As a result, three motorcoach passengers were fatally injured. The driver and remaining motorcoach passengers sustained injuries ranging from minor to serious. The three tractor-trailer drivers, who were inside the combination vehicles at the time of the crash, were uninjured,” the NTSB said.

Officials noted that the westbound Silver Lake rest area has 64 total parking spaces, including 21 that are designated as commercial truck parking spaces, with one of those being a commercial truck handicap space.

The NTSB plans to determine the probable cause of the crash, with the intent of issuing safety recommendations to prevent similar events.
