A truck driver rescued from a dangling semi truck in Louisville was just one of three truck crashes over the weekend.

One of the three crashes happened on Saturday, May 3rd, and the other two occurred on Sunday, May 4th – all on the Kennedy Bridge on Interstate 65 south in Louisville, Kentucky.

According to WDRB, the Saturday afternoon crash involved a car hauler that overturned, throwing several cars over a concrete barrier and onto a nearby on ramp. No injuries were reported in the crash, but the incident did require approximately 5 hours of cleanup, causing backups.

According to WHAS 11, the second wreck in the same location occurred on Sunday morning. That semi truck lost control for an unknown reason, sending the rig crashing through the concrete barrier. The tractor trailer came to a stop with the cab dangling off of the bridge. Louisville Fire rappelled to the cab of the truck to rescue the trapped driver inside of the dangling semi truck, which took about 30 minutes.

“[The driver] was in good spirits,” Fire Chief Brian O’Neill said. “When our firefighter was with him, got him in that harness, he got out. He actually was waving to the first responders there and thanking people, so he was in good shape.”

The third accident happened on Sunday evening, when a semi truck crashed into the same concrete barrier that crews had repaired earlier in the day. That truck driver sustained non life threatening injuries, and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment, reported WLKY.

“I’m not sure if drivers are not paying attention, or they think they’re supposed to be getting off an exit so they try to correct really fast and they lose control,” said Jim Knight, Operations Manager for Suburban Towing, a company often contacted by the city to help in these accidents.

“If you go down the bridge, you’ll see sections where you’ll see the rebar from previous accidents,” Knight said. “They knock the concrete off — it might be the geometry of the bridge itself, the way the curve is. People don’t anticipate it being that sharp.

After the three truck crashes, the Louisville Metro Police are now warning drivers to extra caution while traveling in that area. Louisville is also the site of the infamous Clark Memorial Bridge crash.
