Duncan Aldred. (General Motors)
General Motors Co. on May 5 named Duncan Aldred the new president of the automaker’s North America operations amid tensions between President Donald Trump, Canada and Mexico over tariffs.
In a statement, GM President of Markets Rory Harvey said Aldred’s promotion is aimed at bolstering the automaker’s global internal combustion engine and electric vehicle lineup.
“Duncan comes to the role leading our North America business having driven a decade of growth in Buick and GMC, and most recently leading and modernizing our commercial operations to better serve our customers,” Harvey said.
Harvey had led GM’s North America operations since August 2024, when Marissa West left the Detroit automaker after more than 20 years with the company.
Aldred assumed leadership over GM’s biggest moneymaking region days after Trump’s 25% tariffs on certain auto parts took effect, which analysts warn could raise car prices and might not lead to the U.S. manufacturing renaissance Trump is promising.
Aldred last worked as vice president of commercial growth strategies and operations, a position that faced disruptions such as sales, subscriptions, commercial vehicles and after-sale parts.
Aldred also held leadership roles at GM’s former European brands, Vauxhall and Opel, before taking over Buick and GMC in 2014.
