A man has been charged for the 2011 murder of a truck driver that got him only the loose change in the driver’s pocket.

The murder happened on February 17th, 2011 in East St. Louis. Charges were filed against 34-year-old Alan Davis on May 22nd, 2025.

According to ABC 20, 40-year-old trucker Truman Lee Smith was in the 2600 block of McCasland Avenue in East St. Louis, making a delivery, when he was approached by Davis armed with a gun. Davis demanded money from Smith, who handed him the loose change in his pocket. Davis then shot Smith and fled the scene.

Smith was transported to a hospital, where he was able to offer investigators a description of the suspect before succumbing to his injuries. Davis was eventually identified as the suspect.

Davis was already being held in the Graham Correctional Center in Hillsboro, Illinois for an unrelated conviction of aggravated battery with a firearm back in 2012 when the recent charges were brought against him. He is now charged with first-degree murder. No further information on the incident is available.
