A truck driver is seeking a new attorney ahead of his June trial after a 2024 incident wherin he fatally struck a police officer.

43-year-old truck driver Michael Aaron Jayne made a virtual court appearance on Wednesday, June 4th to voice concerns about his representation in the case. During the May 2024 incident, Jayne reportedly experienced a “paranoid” episode, held his apparent girlfriend against her will, ran over a police officer, fled police on foot, and stole another vehicle. At one point, he also called police on himself.

According to the Daily Herald, Fourth District Judge Thomas Low granted Jayne’s request for a virtual hearing, but did not officially grant permission for a new attorney to be added to the team. Rudy Bautista, another attorney working with Jayne, confirmed that there had been some “breakdown” in communication between Jayne and the attorney.

“I’m reluctant to speak with the prosecution (and them) listening to what I have to say about concerns of my defense your honor. My life is at stake. I’m fighting for my life, and I do have some serious concerns about my defense,” Jayne said during the virtual hearing.

Another hearing has been set for next Wednesday, June 11th, in hopes that Jayne and his team can work out their issues without the appointment of a new attorney. Jayne is currently scheduled for preliminary hearings on June 30th and July 1st.

Jayne is facing nine felony charges, including aggravated murder, and may be facing the death penalty.
