Food distributor United Natural Foods, Inc. (UNFI) has been targeted by a cyber attack that is currently impacting operations, the company says.
In a June 9 press release, Rhode Island-headquartered UNFI said that “we have identified unauthorized activity in our systems and have proactively taken some systems offline while we investigate.”
According to a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filing, UNFI said that the company became aware of the suspected cyber attack on June 5 and noted that “the incident has caused, and is expected to continue to cause, temporary disruptions to the Company’s business operations.”
“As soon as we discovered the activity, an investigation was initiated with the help of leading forensics experts and we have notified law enforcement. We are assessing the unauthorized activity and working to restore our systems to safely bring them back online. As we work through this issue, our customers, suppliers, and associates are our highest priority. We are working closely with them to minimize disruption as much as possible,” UNFI said.
The company says that the investigation is ongoing and “is in its early stages.”
Grocery stores are reporting anticipated impact from missing shipments caused by the outage.
UNFI delivers grocery products to 30,000 locations throughout North America.
