Interstate 20 was reopened in South Carolina less than two days after a tanker truck fire caused a bridge to collapse.

The crash happened on Saturday, June 14th at around 4 a.m. on I-20 near mile marker 13. The Interstate was reopened on Sunday afternoon after a night of construction work by contractors.

According to Fox 57, the Graniteville-Vaucluse-Warrenville Fire Department responded to the scene to find a tractor trailer hauling a tanker fully engulfed in flames beneath the Old Vaucluse Road overpass, which was already structurally damaged. A second bridge over the eastbound lanes of I-20 collapsed after firefighters responded to the scene.

Two people were hurt in the crash, but their conditions are not known. I-20 was closed in both directions between Bettis Academy Road and Edgefield Highway as crews worked to clear the area. Old Vaucluse Road was also closed.

A detour was in place as contractors for the South Carolina Department of Transportation removed the damaged bridge structure from the roadway. The bridge structure has since been demolished and removed from the roadway, and I-20 is reopened in both directions less than two days after the initial collapse.
