Police in Washington D.C. are investigating a fatal accident that took place on Monday night involving a pedestrian, an SUV, and a semi truck hauling military equipment.

The incident took place shortly after 9:30 p.m. on Monday, June 16 in the 2800 block of New York Avenue in Washington, D.C.

When the Metropolitan D.C. Police Department arrived on the scene, they found pedestrian Sierra Nichole Smith, 39, unconscious and not breathing after being struck by two vehicles.

“The preliminary investigation indicates the semi-trailer truck was traveling eastbound in the 1600 block of New York Avenue, Northeast, when the pedestrian ran into the roadway, stumbled, and fell in front of the semi-trailer truck. The driver of the semi-trailer truck struck the pedestrian, causing her to be pinned under the vehicle. The semi-trailer truck continued traveling eastbound. In the 2800 block of New York Avenue, Northeast, the woman was dislodged and was struck by a silver 2007 Chevrolet Suburban traveling behind the semi-trailer truck. The drivers of both vehicles remained on the scene,” police said in a news release.

DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services provided life-saving measures at the scene, but Smith did not survive.

According to WUSA9, the truck was hauling an M1 Abrams tank used in the U.S. Army anniversary parade that took place in D.C. on Saturday. The truck was part of a convoy with a police escort en route to a military base in Jessup, Maryland, when the accident occurred.

The U.S. Army stated that the incident did not involve any soldiers or military personnel.
