The New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) has announced the expansion of enforcement on overweight trucks using weigh-in-motion (WIM) technology.

Starting on June 22, 2025, NYC DOT began issuing $650 violations to overweight Staten Island-bound trucks on the Brooklyn Queens Expressway (BQE). Overweight trucks are targeted using WIM technology, or sensors in the roadway, in conjunction with adjacent cameras to capture the identifying information of vehicles that are overweight.

To gear up for the increased enforcement, officials began a 90 day warning period in March 2025. Owners of overweight trucks caught on the BQE headed towards Staten Island received notices but no fines, as well as information on the June 22 enforcement date.

According to NYC DOT, within the first 75 days of the warning period, more than 3,000 warnings were issued to overweight trucks.

The WIM overweight truck enforcement system has been in use on the BQE for Queens-bound vehicles for more than a year.

“Since NYC DOT began WIM enforcement in 2023, the system has proven to be an incredibly effective tool at deterring overweight trucks from using the BQE in downtown Brooklyn. As of November 2024, overweight vehicles detected on the triple cantilever spans decreased by 60 percent,” NYC DOT said.

“Overweight trucks cause wear-and-tear on our roadways and we all pay the price through expensive repairs to our infrastructure,” said NYC DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez. “That is why we are expanding our role as a nationwide leader by cracking down on overweight vehicles on the BQE, now deploying state-of-the-art roadway weight sensors for Staten Island-bound traffic.”

On May 9, 2025, NYC DOT announced that the state’s 2026 budget includes authorization to expand the use of WIM technology to an additional 14 locations in New York State (NYS), including nine city-owned bridges and highways managed by NYC DOT.
