Authorities have presumed that at least one person was killed when a semi truck crashed off of a bridge into the Delaware River early Friday morning.

The crash took place around 3:40 a.m. on Friday, July 11 on the Delaware Memorial Bridge carrying southbound I-295 in New Castle, Delaware.

According to a news release from the Delaware River and Bay Authority, “a Bobtail Tractor traveling on the Delaware Memorial Bridge southbound into Delaware crossed three lanes of traffic, onto the concrete pad near the Delaware anchorage, and crashed into a concrete wall. The Tractor’s impact collapsed the concrete wall, and the Tractor careened into the Delaware River. The accident occurred on the downslope of the Delaware bound bridge. No other vehicles were impacted.”

The incident sparked a major search involving the U.S. Coast Guard, Delaware State Police, and dive teams.

Around 10:20 a.m., officials announced that the truck had been located in around 20 feet of water, but the search for a driver or other truck occupants continued.

On Friday afternoon, local outlet WPVI said that the driver of the truck is presumed dead as a result of the crash. The identity of that person has not been released, and authorities do not know how many people were in the cab when it went off the bridge into the river.

The outlet also reported that recovery efforts have been suspended for the day and that they will resume on Saturday morning.

The incident remains under investigation.

Agencies participating in rescue efforts include New Castle County Emergency Management, State of Delaware Special Operations Dive Team, Delaware State Police Marine Unit / Dive Team, Wilmington Police, Holloway Terrace and Minquadale Fire Companies, DNREC, Wilmington Fire Marine Unit, and US Coast Guard Air and Marine units.
