A truck driver died on Friday after losing control and crashing into the Ohio River, according to officials in West Virginia.
The crash occurred shortly after 9 a.m. on July 18 in Wellsburg, West Virginia.
Brooke County Emergency Management told WTOV9 that the truck had just come off of the Washington Pike before it was seen moving across 10th Street and then into the Ohio River in Wellsburg.
Video shows the truck hauling an oversized load traveling at a high rate of speed along 10th Street just before crashing into the river.
Firefighters and dive teams responded to the scene by around 9:30 a.m. for a rescue with entrapment in the river.
“Crews arrived to find a large tractor trailer submerged approximately 50′ from the embankment. Rescue-1 (R-1) deployed swimmers to locate the cab of the vehicle with the assistance of various organizations. After marking the location, R-1 deployed divers into the water who were able to recover the driver from the vehicle … Our hearts go out to the family of the driver. The investigation is currently ongoing,” said the Wheeling Fire Department – Rescue 1.
The identity of the deceased driver has not been released.
The incident is under investigation.
